Community Questions President Muizzu’s Proficiency and Work Plan Amid Flooding Crisis in Malé

Malé, Maldives – As severe flooding continues to disrupt life in the capital, the community is raising concerns about President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s preparedness, proficiency, and long-term work plan to address critical urban challenges.

Dr. Muizzu, who has held leadership roles for over a decade seven years as Minister of Housing, two years as Mayor of Malé, and one year as President faces growing scrutiny as heavy rainfall leaves shops, homes, and streets waterlogged, damaging properties and livelihoods.

Residents are questioning whether enough was done during his tenure as Mayor and Minister to address Malé’s recurring flooding issues. Urban drainage systems and infrastructure remain underdeveloped, and citizens are demanding clarity on why such vulnerabilities persist.

"These floods aren’t new. We’ve been dealing with this for years," said a local shop owner whose business was damaged by the rains. "We need a clear plan, not just temporary fixes."

The public has also expressed frustration about the lack of a detailed and transparent strategy from the current administration to address climate-induced challenges and urban infrastructure issues. Many are asking for a comprehensive, forward-looking work plan to prevent such crises from recurring.

Despite these assurances, many remain skeptical and are calling for more concrete actions and regular updates on progress. As the floods continue to impact daily life, the community is urging the government to address both short-term relief efforts and long-term urban vulnerabilities with urgency.
